Grammarly Not Working? Common Errors & Fixes

Usually the Google Docs toggle is off, the extension is outdated, or the document contains footnotes or tables. Pin the extension, toggle 'Check for writing suggestions on Google Docs' off and on, and reinstall if you see 'Update required'.

If the G icon is missing from text fields, the extension is usually unpinned, switched off (gray icon), blocked from reading site data, or replaced by the desktop app or Superhuman Go. Pin it, turn on 'Check text with browser extension', and allow it on all sites.

Grammarly's Word add-in is discontinued on Mac and being retired on Windows, so the fix is usually to install the Grammarly for Windows or Mac desktop app. If it's installed, look for the tab on the right screen edge and check the Block List.

The Grammarly keyboard needs Full Access to check text and an iOS version Grammarly supports. Re-add it under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards, allow Full Access, and switch to it with the globe key.

Cancel at Account > Your account > Subscription > Cancel Subscription (or account.grammarly.com on mobile). Grammarly gives refunds only where the law requires; App Store purchases are refunded by Apple.

Grammarly slows most in long Google Docs (30+ pages), heavy pages and when it conflicts with other extensions. Split long docs, disable it on heavy sites, clear cache, and consider the desktop app instead.

On Windows and Mac the floating widget was replaced by a tab on the right screen edge, so many users think Grammarly vanished. Hover the right edge, re-enable the Grammarly tab and menu bar icon, check the Block List, and restart Grammarly.

Grammarly for Windows relies on Microsoft .NET Framework; repairing it fixes most crashes. On Mac, follow Apple's frozen-app steps and send Console crash reports to support.

Grammarly stays signed in until cookies are cleared, so repeated logouts mean your browser, antivirus or a cleaner app is deleting site data. Allow sites to save data and stop clearing cookies on exit; on Mac desktop, clear saved credentials.

The 'You're out of prompts' message means you used your monthly generative AI allowance: 100 on Free, 2,000 on Pro/Business. Prompts refill monthly on your account's refill date; paid users can contact support if they run out early.
