Obsidian Images Not Showing in Notes

Workaround available Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Embedded images usually fail because the link no longer matches the file's path or name, the attachment folder setting points elsewhere, or a stray character breaks rendering. Check the raw link, the Files and links settings, and test with plugins off.

Most likely fix: Check the link.

Symptoms

Embeds show as a broken link or '... is not created yet', images disappear after moving the vault, or nothing renders below a certain line in a note.

Why it happens

  • Image renamed or moved outside Obsidian, breaking the link
  • Spaces in paths combined with Markdown-style links
  • Attachment folder setting changed or vault moved
  • Stray < > characters that Obsidian treats as HTML
  • Vault on a network share that isn't mapped as a drive
  • Plugins, themes or CSS snippets hiding images

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Check the link

    1. Switch to Source mode and confirm the ![[file.png]] name matches the file exactly
    2. For Markdown-style links, encode spaces as %20: ![](my%20image.png)
  2. 2. Check attachment settings

    1. Settings > Files and links > 'Default location for new attachments'
    2. Make sure files are actually in that folder; turn on 'Automatically update internal links' before moving files
  3. 3. Remove stray HTML characters

    1. Look for < or > used as plain text above the image and remove or escape them
  4. 4. Test without plugins and snippets

    1. Turn on Restricted mode and disable CSS snippets, then restart
  5. 5. Map network vaults to a drive

    1. On Windows, map the network share to a drive letter instead of using a \\server path
