Anytype Asks for Key Every Time on Linux
Workaround available Linux Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
On Linux, Anytype asks for your Key at every launch when no system keyring is available. Install GNOME Keyring (or another Secret Service keyring) and the app's dependencies, then log in once more.
Most likely fix: Install GNOME Keyring.
Symptoms
Every time you open Anytype on Linux you must paste your 12-word Key again.
Why it happens
- No keyring/Secret Service installed to store the Key
- Missing Anytype dependencies
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Install GNOME Keyring
- Install gnome-keyring with your package manager (e.g. sudo apt install gnome-keyring)
- Log out of your desktop session and back in so the keyring starts
- Open Anytype and log in with your Key once
2. Check dependencies
- Review the dependencies list in the anytype-ts GitHub README
- Install anything missing and restart Anytype
3. Try a different package
- If you use the Flatpak, try the .deb or AppImage from download.anytype.io
- One user fixed a separate Linux launch problem by switching from Flatpak to .deb
This guide also covers
