Neovim Escape Key Delay in tmux
Workaround available macOS, Linux Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
A noticeable lag when pressing Esc to leave insert mode inside tmux comes from tmux's escape-time. Lower it to about 10ms.
Most likely fix: Lower tmux escape-time.
Symptoms
Leaving insert mode feels slow only inside tmux or GNU screen; :checkhealth flags escape-time.
Why it happens
- tmux waits to see if Esc starts a key sequence
- GNU screen maptimeout too high
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Lower tmux escape-time
- Add set -sg escape-time 10 to ~/.tmux.conf (tmux 2.6+)
- Reload: tmux source-file ~/.tmux.conf
2. GNU screen
- Add maptimeout 10 to ~/.screenrc
- With screen mouse mode on, Esc can be lost; press it twice as a workaround
