Neovim Python Provider Not Working (pynvim)
Workaround available Windows, macOS, Linux Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Python-based plugins need the pynvim module available to Neovim. Install it with uv or pipx and, if a virtualenv interferes, point g:python3_host_prog at the right interpreter.
Most likely fix: Install pynvim.
Symptoms
:checkhealth shows the Python 3 provider as missing, or plugins error with 'No python3 provider found'.
Why it happens
- pynvim not installed
- Project virtualenv active without pynvim
- Old pynvim version
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Install pynvim
- Make sure Python 3.9+ is on PATH
- Run uv tool install --upgrade pynvim (or pipx install pynvim)
- Restart and run :checkhealth vim.provider
2. Pin the interpreter
- Set vim.g.python3_host_prog = '/full/path/to/python3' (the one with pynvim)
- Test with nvim -u NORC to rule out your config
