Zoom Echo or Audio Feedback in Meeting
Workaround available Windows, macOS, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Zoom echo is caused by someone's speakers feeding into their mic, or by two devices in the same room joined to audio. Use headphones and leave audio on all but one device in a room.
Most likely fix: Use headphones.
Symptoms
Participants hear their own voice repeated, or a loud howling/feedback loop.
Why it happens
- Speakers too loud or too close to the microphone
- Two or more devices in the same room joined to audio
- Computer and phone audio connected at once
- Original Sound on or echo cancellation off
- Virtual audio routing or OBS monitoring
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Use headphones
- Plug in headphones or earbuds so the mic can't pick up speaker output
2. Leave audio on extra devices
- In shared rooms, only one device should join audio; others click Leave Computer Audio (muting isn't enough)
3. Host: find the source
- Mute all, then unmute participants one by one
- Mute the person causing feedback
4. Check audio settings
- Settings > Audio: keep echo cancellation on and turn off Original Sound for musicians
- Disable monitoring in OBS or audio interfaces
