Bear Crashes When Importing From Evernote

Workaround available macOS, iOS Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Bear crashes on some large .enex imports; the most recent crash (Bear 2.7.1 on macOS Tahoe) was fixed in 2.7.2. Update first, then import in smaller batches and isolate notes with duplicate titles.

Most likely fix: Update Bear to the latest version.

Symptoms

Bear quits partway through an .enex import, only some notes arrive, or imported notes show raw ![image] markdown instead of pictures.

Why it happens

  • Bug in Bear 2.7.1 importer (fixed in 2.7.2)
  • Two notes with the same title in one .enex file
  • Very large exports with thousands of notes
  • Images inside tables in Evernote notes

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update Bear to the latest version

    1. Open the App Store and update Bear
    2. Retry the import via File > Import Notes
  2. 2. Import in smaller batches

    1. In Evernote, export one notebook at a time as .enex
    2. Import each file separately into Bear
    3. When a batch crashes, split it further to find the problem note
  3. 3. Separate notes with duplicate titles

    1. Find notes sharing the same title in the failing notebook
    2. Export them individually and import one after another
  4. 4. Fix missing images

    1. Open notes showing raw image markdown
    2. Re-attach the image from the original Evernote note, or re-import that note alone
