Bear Notes Not Syncing Between Devices

Ongoing macOS, iOS, iPadOS Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Bear sync usually fails because of an Apple ID mismatch, full iCloud storage, sync disabled in Bear, or devices on different Bear versions. Update Bear everywhere, confirm the same Apple ID and free iCloud space, then toggle Bear's sync off and on.

Most likely fix: Update Bear on every device.

Symptoms

Notes created on Mac never appear on iPhone (or vice versa), the last sync date in Settings > Sync is days old, or the sidebar shows a cloud icon with a red dot or strikethrough.

Why it happens

  • Bear Pro subscription inactive or expired
  • iCloud storage full
  • Different Apple ID for iCloud or App Store on one device
  • Devices running different Bear versions
  • iCloud Drive disabled (iOS 16 / macOS 14 and earlier)
  • Apple iCloud outage
  • Note over 500,000 characters or attachment over 250 MB

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update Bear on every device

    1. Open the App Store on each Mac, iPhone and iPad
    2. Install the latest Bear update
    3. Reopen Bear on all devices and wait a minute
  2. 2. Check the sync status icon

    1. Look at the cloud icon at the bottom of Bear's sidebar
    2. Two arrows = syncing (keep the app open); strikethrough = offline or sync disabled; red dot = error
    3. Click or tap the red-dot icon to open the Sync panel with the suggested fix
  3. 3. Confirm Apple ID and iCloud settings

    1. iOS: Settings > [your name] > iCloud - confirm signed in and Bear allowed
    2. Mac: System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Options, make sure Bear is checked
    3. Use the same iCloud account and the same App Store account on all devices
    4. Check iCloud storage has free space
    5. On iOS 16/macOS 14 or older, make sure iCloud Drive is on
  4. 4. Toggle Bear sync off and on

    1. Open Bear > Settings > Sync
    2. Turn sync off on the device that is stuck
    3. Quit Bear completely, reopen it and turn sync back on
    4. Repeat once or twice if needed - users report it resumes after a couple of toggles
  5. 5. Check Apple System Status

    1. Open apple.com/support/systemstatus
    2. Look for iCloud or CloudKit outages and wait if one is listed
  6. 6. Send sync logs to Bear support

    1. Mac: Help > Enable File Log, quit with ⌘Q, reopen and wait 1 minute
    2. Help > Open Logs Folder, compress the Bear folder
    3. iOS: Settings > Advanced > Enable File Log, force-quit, reopen, then Share File Log
    4. Email to bear-support@shinyfrog.net with subject 'Sync not working with proper configuration'
