Roam Research Not Loading or Graph Too Big
Workaround available Web, Desktop, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Roam graphs that hang on load or show 'graph too big' are usually large graphs combined with heavy roam/js extensions. Disabling extensions such as Roam42 on the affected device fixed it for users.
Most likely fix: Disable heavy extensions.
Symptoms
Roam stays on the loading screen, needs several reopen attempts before the graph appears, or the mobile app warns that the graph is too big.
Why it happens
- Very large graph (exports over 100 MB reported)
- Heavy roam/js or Roam Depot extensions running on load
- Mobile devices with less memory than desktop
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Disable heavy extensions
- Open Roam Depot and switch off large extensions, starting with Roam42/RoamJS toolkits
- For multi-module extensions, turn off unneeded modules in the extension's own settings
- Reload the graph
2. Load extensions only where needed
- If the graph only fails on mobile, keep the extension enabled on desktop but disable it on the phone
- Users fixed 'graph too big' on iOS by disabling Roam42 on mobile
3. Reopen and keep a backup
- Close and reopen the app or tab; users report a graph often loads after a few attempts
- Once it loads, export a JSON backup (••• > Export All) before experimenting further
