Roam Research Notes Disappeared After Sync
Ongoing Web, Desktop Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
If recent blocks vanish after a sync, don't clear browser data or log out on the affected device. Check another device or session that may still hold the changes and export a JSON backup from it first.
Most likely fix: Protect the affected session.
Symptoms
Blocks or whole days of notes written recently are missing after reopening Roam, or the sync indicator stays stuck before content disappears.
Why it happens
- Edits made offline or in a session that never finished syncing
- Clearing browser cache/storage removes unsynced local changes
- Sync indicator stuck on a slow or interrupted connection
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Protect the affected session
- Do not clear the browser cache, site data, or log out on the device that had the edits
- Keep that tab or app open and online so pending changes can sync
2. Recover from another copy
- Open the graph on another device or browser where the notes may still exist
- Export a JSON backup from there (••• > Export All > JSON)
3. Back up regularly
- Export a JSON backup on a schedule so a sync failure never costs more than a few days of work
- Report the incident to Roam support with the graph name and time
