Bubble Backend Workflow Not Running

Workaround available Web, Mobile Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Scheduled API (backend) workflows that never run are most often blocked by a paused scheduler, a search that returns nothing, or an error that silently stops the sequence. Check the scheduler and the server logs for the live version first.

Most likely fix: Check the scheduler.

Symptoms

'Schedule API workflow' appears to fire but actions never happen; nothing in server logs; works in test but not live.

Why it happens

  • Scheduler paused in Logs (separately for test and live)
  • Backend workflows not enabled in Settings > API
  • The search that feeds the workflow returns an empty list
  • An API error stops the workflow without warning
  • Large list scheduling hitting capacity or timeouts

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Check the scheduler

    1. Open the Logs tab > Scheduler
    2. Make sure it isn't paused, for both development and live versions
    3. Pause and resume it if it looks stuck
  2. 2. Enable backend workflows

    1. Go to Settings > API
    2. Tick 'This app exposes a Workflow API'
    3. Deploy to live if testing on live
  3. 3. Read the server logs

    1. Logs > Server logs, filter by the workflow name
    2. Look for API errors or empty searches before the failing step
  4. 4. Debug the calling workflow

    1. Run the front-end workflow in debug mode step by step
    2. Confirm the list or Thing passed to the backend workflow isn't empty
  5. 5. Avoid scheduling from 'Do every X seconds'

    1. Trigger backend workflows from a specific event or a recursive workflow instead
