ChatGPT Error in Message Stream

Workaround available Web, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

'Error in message stream' means the answer's stream broke before it finished, usually server-side during an incident or on very long Thinking runs. Click Regenerate, then start a new chat, and split long tasks.

Most likely fix: Regenerate the answer.

Symptoms

The answer stops mid-sentence and 'Error in message stream' appears; it may repeat in the same chat or Project.

Why it happens

  • Server-side incident (OpenAI acknowledged spikes in June 2025 and Feb 2026)
  • Very long reasoning (Thinking) runs
  • One broken long chat or Project
  • Networks that cut long-lived connections
  • VPN or proxy

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Regenerate the answer

    1. Click Retry/Regenerate under the failed reply
  2. 2. Start a new chat

    1. If it fails again in the same chat, open a new chat
    2. Paste a short summary of the context instead of the whole history
  3. 3. Check OpenAI's status page first

    1. Open status.openai.com
    2. Look for an active incident on ChatGPT, Voice or Image Generation
    3. If there is one, wait for it to be marked resolved - nothing on your side will fix it
  4. 4. Split long tasks or lower reasoning effort

    1. Ask for the output in parts
    2. Use a faster model or lower thinking effort for long jobs
  5. 5. Change network

    1. Try mobile data instead of a work or school network
    2. Turn off VPN/proxy
