Google Drive Files Missing
Workaround available Web, Windows, macOS Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Most 'missing' files are in Trash, were in a folder someone else owned, or failed to sync into Lost & Found. A 2023 Drive for desktop bug (versions 84.0.0.0-84.0.4.0) did lose local data; it was fixed, but check trash, activity and Lost & Found before assuming loss.
Most likely fix: Check Trash.
Symptoms
Files or folders you expect to see in Drive no longer appear, or Drive appears rolled back to an older state on a computer.
Why it happens
- File moved to Trash (by you or a collaborator)
- File lived in a folder owned by someone who removed or unshared it
- Drive for desktop couldn't upload it and moved it to Lost & Found
- Old Drive for desktop sync bug (v84.0.x, 2023)
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Check Trash
- Open drive.google.com/drive/trash
- Right-click the file > Restore
2. Search and check activity
- Use Drive search with the file name or type
- Open the Activity panel (i icon) on the parent folder to see who moved or deleted it
3. Check Lost & Found on desktop
- Open the Lost & Found folder created by Drive for desktop
- Move files back into My Drive to retry
4. Don't disconnect while files are unsynced
- Back up the local Drive cache/Lost & Found before choosing Disconnect account - disconnecting deletes Lost & Found
- Update Drive for desktop to the latest version
