Google Drive Storage Full After Deleting Files
Workaround available Web, Android, iOS Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Deleted files still count until you empty three separate trash folders - Drive, Gmail and Google Photos - and Google says the storage meter can take 48-72 hours to update. Then look for large files, backups and hidden app data.
Most likely fix: Empty every trash.
Symptoms
Drive or Gmail says storage is full (or nearly full) even though you deleted files, or the storage number doesn't go down.
Why it happens
- Files sitting in Drive trash, Gmail Trash/Spam or Photos trash
- Storage meter takes up to 72 hours to refresh
- Large Gmail attachments and Photos backups share the same 15GB
- Android device and WhatsApp backups count toward storage
- Hidden app data stored in Drive
- Files you own inside other people's folders still count
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Empty every trash
- Drive: open drive.google.com/drive/trash > Empty trash
- Gmail: open Trash and Spam and click Empty Trash now
- Photos: open photos.google.com/trash > Empty trash
- Wait 48-72 hours for the meter to update
2. Find the largest Drive files
- In Drive, click Storage in the left menu
- Files are sorted largest first - delete or move what you don't need
3. Delete large Gmail attachments
- Search Gmail for has:attachment larger:10M
- Or older_than:2y has:attachment
- Delete and then empty Trash
4. Remove old device and WhatsApp backups
- Go to one.google.com/storage/management and scroll to Backups
- On Android WhatsApp: Settings > Chats > Chat backup, turn off Include videos
5. Delete hidden app data
- In Drive, Settings gear > Settings > Manage apps
- For each app, Options > Delete hidden app data
6. Find duplicates
- Switch Drive to list view and sort by Name
- Look for '(1)' or 'Copy of' in file names
