Hotjar Heatmap Not Showing Data

Workaround available Web Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Empty heatmaps usually mean the tracking code is not firing on that URL, targeting excludes the page, or there is too little traffic yet. Hotjar says data normally starts appearing within about 60 minutes.

Most likely fix: Check the code on that exact URL.

Symptoms

A heatmap shows 'No data collected' or very few clicks, even though the page gets visits.

Why it happens

  • Tracking code missing or blocked on that page
  • Heatmap URL or targeting rule does not match the real page URL
  • Visitors leave without interacting, so nothing is collected
  • Content is inside an iframe, which Hotjar cannot track
  • Site blocks Hotjar's IPs or domains
  • Session allowance used up

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Check the code on that exact URL

    1. Open the page, developer tools > Network, filter 'hotjar'
    2. Confirm a script with your Site ID loads
  2. 2. Fix the URL and targeting rules

    1. Compare the heatmap's page URL with the live URL (trailing slashes, query strings, subdomains)
    2. In Site settings > Session targeting & tracking, make sure the page is included
  3. 3. Give it time and traffic

    1. Wait at least an hour after setup
    2. Low-traffic pages need more visits before the heatmap is useful
  4. 4. Allow Hotjar through your site's protections

    1. Add Hotjar's domains and IPs to firewall or allow lists
