Hotjar Not Tracking Single Page App Page Changes
Workaround available Web Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Hotjar normally detects URL changes in single page apps, but routes that use # fragments or change content without changing the URL are missed. Switch URL tracking to include fragments or trigger page changes manually.
Most likely fix: Include fragments.
Symptoms
Recordings and heatmaps lump all views of a React, Vue or Angular app under one URL, or new pages never appear.
Why it happens
- Router uses # fragments, which are excluded by default
- Content changes without any URL change
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Include fragments
- Open Site settings and find the single page app / URL change setting
- Choose to track URL changes automatically including fragments
2. Track page changes manually
- Choose manual tracking in Site settings
- From your router, notify Hotjar of each navigation using the manual page-change method documented for the @hotjar/browser npm package
