Why it happens

  • Website URL in the login item doesn't match the sign-in page or subdomain
  • Extension is locked or doesn't have permission to run on all sites
  • Browser's built-in password manager or another extension competes for the fields
  • Multi-step login, iframe form or a password field that appears only after the username
  • Outdated extension or browser

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Correct the website URL on the login item

    1. Open the login in Proton Pass and edit it
    2. Check the website address matches the actual sign-in page
    3. Add extra URLs for subdomains or regional login pages and remove wrong ones
    4. Save and reload the page

  2. 2. Unlock the extension and give it access to all sites

    1. Click the Proton Pass icon and unlock it
    2. In the browser's extension settings, set Proton Pass site access to all sites rather than on click

  3. 3. Turn off the browser's password manager

    1. In Chrome/Edge/Brave settings, turn off offering to save passwords and built-in autofill
    2. Temporarily disable other password manager extensions
    3. Reload the login page

  4. 4. Fill manually on multi-step or iframe logins

    1. Click into the field first
    2. Open the Proton Pass extension and select the login item to fill it

  5. 5. Update and restart

    1. Update the Proton Pass extension and the browser
    2. Fully close and reopen the browser
    3. If it still fails, sign out of the extension and back in
