Vercel Deployment Failed: Build Error
Ongoing Web (Vercel dashboard, Vercel CLI, GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket) Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
A failed Vercel deployment almost always has its real cause a few lines above the final 'Command "npm run build" exited with 1' line. Run the same build locally, fix the first red error in the build log, then redeploy without the build cache.
Most likely fix: Find the first real error in the build log.
Symptoms
Deployment shows Error status; build log ends with 'Command "npm run build" exited with 1' (or yarn/pnpm), or an overlay says the build could not start and no build log is shown.
Why it happens
- Type or lint errors that only fail in a production build
- Module not found from case-sensitive import paths (works on macOS/Windows, fails on Linux)
- Missing environment variables at build time
- Invalid vercel.json or wrong Framework Preset / Root Directory
- Stale or corrupted build cache
- Build exceeded the 45-minute limit or memory limit
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Find the first real error in the build log
- Open the project > Deployments and select the failed deployment
- Expand the Building accordion in Deployment Details
- Scroll up from 'exited with 1' to the first line marked Error and fix that
2. Reproduce the build locally
- Run the exact build command locally (e.g. npm run build)
- Fix TypeScript, lint or import errors it reports
- Check import paths match file names exactly, including upper/lower case
3. Check project build settings
- Settings > Build and Deployment > Framework Settings: pick the correct Framework Preset
- Confirm Root Directory points to the app folder in a monorepo
- Confirm Build Command and Output Directory overrides are correct
4. Redeploy without the build cache
- On the deployment, click Redeploy
- Uncheck 'Use existing Build Cache'
- Or run vercel --force, or set VERCEL_FORCE_NO_BUILD_CACHE=1
5. Handle builds that fail with no log
- Validate vercel.json syntax
- Check the Ignored Build Step setting is not skipping the build
- Check the Provisioning Integrations step for a failed Marketplace integration
This guide also covers
