Coda Automations Not Running

Ongoing Web Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Coda automations usually stop because the rule's owner left the workspace, an If condition isn't met, data like an email address is missing, or the rule updates a cross-doc/Pack table. Check the rule's activity log and red failure markers first.

Most likely fix: Find the failing rule.

Symptoms

Rules don't fire, an "Automation failed" notice doesn't say which rule, generic "Coda Error" messages, or scheduled automations running late.

Why it happens

  • Automation acts on behalf of a user who left the workspace
  • If condition not met
  • Missing data (e.g. empty email address)
  • Rule tries to update a cross-doc or Pack table
  • One stuck rule blocking later automations, API and webhook calls until it times out
  • Automation quota reached on Free or Pro
  • Platform incident delaying time-based automations

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Find the failing rule

    1. Open the Automations panel and look for rules with a red marker
    2. Open the rule's activity log to see the error
    3. Doc status emails also name the failing rule
  2. 2. Re-own the automation

    1. If the creator left, recreate or reassign the rule under an active Doc Maker
  3. 3. Check conditions and inputs

    1. Test the If condition on a sample row
    2. Make sure required fields like email addresses are filled and formatted correctly
  4. 4. Avoid writing to cross-doc or Pack tables

    1. Write to a local table instead and sync from there
  5. 5. Check your plan's automation quota

    1. Free has a low quota and Pro a medium one; Business has unlimited automations
  6. 6. Report the bug

    1. Use the ? icon in the bottom-right of the doc to send a bug report
