Coda is usually slow because of heavy calculations: big tables, conditional formatting, formulas spanning multiple tables, lookups, error cells or Pack formula columns. Use the Calculation Performance Analyzer to find the worst formulas and simplify them.

Symptoms

A persistent "Calculating" or "Syncing" indicator, laggy typing, slow page switching and docs that freeze on load until calculations finish.

Why it happens

  • Tables beyond roughly 5-10K rows, per Coda staff
  • Conditional formatting on large tables
  • Formulas pulling data from more than one table, and lookups
  • Cells with formula errors
  • Pack formulas in columns of large tables
  • The same doc open in several browser tabs, or browser extensions

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Run the Calculation Performance Analyzer

    1. Open the doc's performance/debug calculations tool
    2. Sort by calculation time and fix the top formulas first

  2. 2. Write smaller, optimizer-friendly formulas

    1. Split large formulas into helper columns
    2. Use Filter(X and Y) instead of Filter(AND(X, Y)) so the optimizer works
    3. Fix cells that show errors

  3. 3. Remove heavy conditional formatting

    1. Delete or simplify conditional formats on big tables

  4. 4. Move Pack formulas out of big tables

    1. Use a sync table instead of a Pack formula on every row
    2. Or run the Pack action on demand with a button

  5. 5. Check your browser

    1. Close duplicate tabs of the same doc
    2. Test in a private window; if it's faster, disable extensions one by one

  6. 6. Archive old rows

    1. Move historical rows to an archive doc to keep active tables small
