Why Is NordVPN So Slow?
Workaround available Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
On NordLynx with a nearby standard server NordVPN typically loses only around 5% of speed. Big slowdowns almost always come from a distant or busy server, Double VPN or obfuscated servers, OpenVPN, or Threat Protection and antivirus inspecting traffic.
Most likely fix: Switch to NordLynx.
Symptoms
Downloads and streaming are much slower when connected, pages load slowly, or speed varies a lot between servers.
Why it happens
- Connected to a distant or overloaded server
- Using Double VPN (up to 80% speed loss) or obfuscated servers
- OpenVPN instead of NordLynx
- Threat Protection or third-party antivirus scanning traffic
- Slow base connection or Wi-Fi/mobile data switching
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Switch to NordLynx
- Open Settings > Connection (or advanced settings)
- Set VPN protocol to NordLynx
- Reconnect
2. Use a nearby standard server
- Use Quick Connect or pick a server in your own or a neighboring country
- Avoid Double VPN, Onion over VPN and obfuscated servers unless you need them
3. Test without Threat Protection and antivirus
- Turn off Threat Protection and run a speed test
- Temporarily pause third-party antivirus web scanning and test again
- Re-enable and add exceptions if one of them was the cause
4. Check your base connection
- Run a speed test with the VPN off
- Use a wired connection or stay on one network rather than switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data
