Reflect Open Import Failed

Ongoing Mac Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Importing a Reflect Classic export into Reflect Open can fail when the export has more than 1000 images with the same file name (like image.png). The importer runs out of numbered names. Export with the 'Reflect Open' format, import into a fresh graph, and ask on Discord if a large graph still fails.

Most likely fix: Re-export in the Reflect Open format.

Symptoms

Settings > Import > Import zip stops with an error, or the graph comes in incomplete after importing a Classic export.

Why it happens

  • More than 1000 attachments share the same file name (a confirmed importer bug)
  • The export was made in a format other than 'Reflect Open'
  • Importing a Logseq, Mem or other app export that's only supported in beta

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Re-export in the Reflect Open format

    1. Open Reflect Classic on Mac or at reflect.app
    2. Go to Settings > Graph > Export
    3. Keep the format set to Reflect Open and click Export notes
    4. Wait for the .zip to finish downloading
  2. 2. Import into a new graph

    1. In Reflect Open, create a new graph on the Welcome screen (iCloud or a local folder)
    2. Go to Settings > Import > Import zip…
    3. Select the zip; existing content isn't replaced
  3. 3. Work around the duplicate image name limit

    1. If your graph has many pasted screenshots, they're often all named image.png
    2. Ask for help in Reflect's Discord or on GitHub issue #900, which tracks the bug
    3. Keep using Classic until a fix ships; there's no migration deadline
  4. 4. Keep your Classic graph as a backup

    1. Don't delete anything in Classic after importing
    2. Edits don't sync between the apps, so pick one to keep working in
