The 12 Dropbox problems users hit most often, why they happen, and the fixes that actually work — collected from user reports, forums, and official support docs.
Dropbox usually stops syncing because the desktop app isn't running, storage or disk is full, the folder is excluded by selective sync, or antivirus/permissions block it. Check those first, then update or reinstall the app.
Dropbox stuck on 'Indexing' or 'Syncing X files' is usually caused by one problem file, antivirus scanning, or a very large file count. Find and re-add the stuck file, pause/resume, clear the cache, and whitelist Dropbox in security software.
Dropbox uses high CPU during big syncs or when antivirus/backup apps keep touching files, and RAM grows with file count (performance drops around 300,000 files). Reduce synced files and exclude Dropbox from scanners.
Free Dropbox Basic accounts can be linked to only 3 devices. To add a new one, unlink an old device in Settings > Security > Devices (signing out isn't enough) or upgrade to a paid plan.
On newer macOS the Dropbox folder moved to ~/Library/CloudStorage and appears under Locations, not Favorites. Files may also show as online-only when disk space is low. Reveal the folder, mark files available offline, and keep only one Dropbox version installed.
Dropbox uploads fail when the file exceeds size or quota limits, the connection drops, the browser cache is bad, or the name/type isn't supported. Check limits, try another browser or the desktop app, and clear the cache.
A 'selective sync conflict' folder means two folders with the same name ended up in the same place, usually after you unsynced a folder and created a local one with the same name. Your files are safe in both; merge them and delete one.
Dropbox creates a 'conflicted copy' when two versions of a file are saved at once, for example by two editors, an offline edit, or a file left open on another computer. Merge manually and use real-time co-authoring to stop it.
Dropbox counts shared folders you've joined, Dropbox Backup data and deleted-but-recoverable files differently than your local folder shows. Usually a shared folder is eating your quota; leave it or ask for a view-only link.
The 'can't establish a secure connection' error is usually a wrong system clock, a proxy, or antivirus/firewall SSL inspection. Fix the date, set the proxy to No Proxy or enter your details, and update or whitelist your security software.
Camera uploads usually stall because the app lost photo permissions, background activity is restricted, or the upload got stuck. Update the app, re-grant full photo access, and toggle camera uploads off and on.
Slow Dropbox uploads are often caused by the desktop app's bandwidth limit, many small files, or antivirus scanning. Set Upload rate to Don't limit, batch small files into archives, and exclude Dropbox from scanners.
