Dropbox Files Not Showing on Mac (File Provider)
Ongoing macOS Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
On newer macOS the Dropbox folder moved to ~/Library/CloudStorage and appears under Locations, not Favorites. Files may also show as online-only when disk space is low. Reveal the folder, mark files available offline, and keep only one Dropbox version installed.
Most likely fix: Find the folder under Locations.
Symptoms
The Dropbox folder is missing from the Finder sidebar or toolbar, files show cloud icons and won't open offline, Spotlight doesn't find files, or other apps can't find previously linked files.
Why it happens
- Migration to Apple's File Provider API moved the folder to ~/Library/CloudStorage
- Library folder is hidden in Finder
- macOS automatically makes files online-only when disk space is low
- Multiple Dropbox app versions installed
- Photos libraries, Final Cut Pro libraries and InDesign .idlk files aren't supported
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Find the folder under Locations
- Open Finder and look under Locations in the sidebar
- Or press Command + Shift + . to show hidden files and go to ~/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox
- Drag frequently used subfolders into Favorites
2. Make files available offline
- Right-click the file or folder > Make available offline
- If a folder-level change does nothing, try selecting the files individually
3. Free disk space
- Keep enough free space so macOS doesn't switch files back to online-only
4. Remove duplicate Dropbox installs
- Uninstall every Dropbox version
- Reinstall the latest from dropbox.com/install
5. Relink files in third-party apps
- Reopen projects from the new ~/Library/CloudStorage path so apps update their links
6. Move unsupported libraries out of Dropbox
- Store Photos and Final Cut Pro libraries on a local drive and back them up separately
