Dropbox Conflicted Copy Files Keep Appearing
Workaround available Windows, macOS Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Dropbox creates a 'conflicted copy' when two versions of a file are saved at once, for example by two editors, an offline edit, or a file left open on another computer. Merge manually and use real-time co-authoring to stop it.
Most likely fix: Compare and merge.
Symptoms
Files named like 'Report (John's conflicted copy 2026-05-01).docx' appear next to the original; on Mac some users see '(shared folder conflict)' copies of whole folders.
Why it happens
- Two people editing the same file at once
- Editing offline while someone else edits online
- File left open with auto-save on another computer
- Sync errors creating duplicate versions
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Compare and merge
- Open both files side by side
- In Word use Review > Compare to merge changes
- Delete the copy you don't need
2. Turn on real-time co-authoring
- Edit Office files through Microsoft 365 co-authoring or Google Docs so changes merge live
- Enabling Microsoft co-authoring in Dropbox removes the badge-based workflow
3. Close files on other computers
- Quit Office/editor apps on machines you're not using so auto-save doesn't create new versions
4. Fix shared-folder conflict folders on Mac
- Move any unique files from the '(shared folder conflict)' folder into the original
- Delete the conflict folder
