Dropbox Stuck on Syncing or Indexing
Workaround available Windows, macOS, Linux Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Dropbox stuck on 'Indexing' or 'Syncing X files' is usually caused by one problem file, antivirus scanning, or a very large file count. Find and re-add the stuck file, pause/resume, clear the cache, and whitelist Dropbox in security software.
Most likely fix: Find and re-add the stuck file.
Symptoms
The desktop app shows 'Indexing...' or 'Syncing N files' for hours or days, the count never drops, and a blue spinning icon stays on one file or folder.
Why it happens
- A single file Dropbox can't read or upload
- Antivirus or backup software repeatedly touching files
- Hundreds of thousands of files to index
- Corrupted cache
- Server-side incident
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Find and re-add the stuck file
- Click the Dropbox icon to see which file is syncing
- Move that file out of the Dropbox folder
- Wait for the green checkmark, then move it back in
2. Pause and resume syncing
- Click the Dropbox icon > avatar > Pause syncing
- Wait a minute, then choose Resume syncing
3. Clear the cache and restart
- Quit Dropbox completely
- Windows: paste %HOMEPATH%\Dropbox\.dropbox.cache in File Explorer and delete its contents
- Mac: open the Dropbox folder, press Shift-Command-. and empty .dropbox.cache
- Relaunch Dropbox
4. Exclude Dropbox from antivirus and backup tools
- Temporarily disable antivirus/backup apps one at a time in Task Manager or Activity Monitor
- If syncing resumes, add the Dropbox folder to that app's exclusion list
5. Reduce the number of synced files
- Use Selective Sync or make big archives online-only
- Keep the account below roughly 300,000 locally synced files
6. Check status.dropbox.com
- If many users are affected, wait for Dropbox to resolve the incident instead of reinstalling
