Dropbox Basic 3 Device Limit Reached
Ongoing Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Free Dropbox Basic accounts can be linked to only 3 devices. To add a new one, unlink an old device in Settings > Security > Devices (signing out isn't enough) or upgrade to a paid plan.
Most likely fix: Unlink a device you no longer use.
Symptoms
When signing in on a new computer, phone or tablet, Dropbox says you've reached the device limit and asks you to unlink a device or upgrade.
Why it happens
- Basic accounts are capped at 3 linked devices since March 2019
- Old devices still linked even if you no longer use them
- Signing out of an app doesn't unlink the device
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Unlink a device you no longer use
- Sign in at dropbox.com
- Click your avatar > Settings > Security
- Under Devices, click the trash icon next to the old device
2. Use the website instead of an app
- Browser sessions at dropbox.com don't count toward the 3-device limit
3. Upgrade to remove the cap
- Plus, Standard and Advanced have no device limit
This guide also covers
- dropbox device limit
- dropbox basic 3 devices
- dropbox too many devices
- dropbox free device limit
- unlink device dropbox
