Tana Markdown Export Missing Images

Workaround available Web, Mac, Windows, Linux Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Tana's Markdown zip doesn't include media; images appear as links to Tana's storage. Run Tana's localize-tana-media.py helper on the unzipped export to download media into an _media folder and rewrite the links.

Most likely fix: Run Tana's media helper.

Symptoms

Exported Markdown shows image links instead of files, some attachments are missing, or images break after Tana links stop working.

Why it happens

  • Markdown export only includes links to media
  • Some attachments have no link in the export

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Run Tana's media helper

    1. Export the workspace: open the workspace home node > ellipsis menu > export as Markdown
    2. Unzip the archive and keep the original zip as a backup
    3. Download localize-tana-media.py and save it outside the folder
    4. Run: python3 localize-tana-media.py "/path/to/unzipped-folder" (use py on Windows)
  2. 2. Save remaining attachments manually

    1. Open nodes whose attachments had no link
    2. Download them from Tana individually
  3. 3. Also export JSON

    1. Export the workspace as JSON as well, which keeps more structure for later migration
