Tana Supertag Changes Not Updating Nodes

Workaround available Web, Mac, Windows, Linux Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Nodes you already edited are detached from the supertag template, so template changes don't flow to them. Save any content you need, then hard-delete the stale element with Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Backspace so the template repopulates it.

Most likely fix: Hard-delete the stale element.

Symptoms

You change a supertag template but existing tagged nodes keep old fields or content; some fields can't be deleted; fields don't auto-initialize.

Why it happens

  • Editing a template-derived node detaches it
  • The tag extends another tag and inherits its fields
  • Fields nested under other nodes in the template
  • Field added after the supertag was applied

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Hard-delete the stale element

    1. Move any content you want to keep out of the template element
    2. Select the stale node
    3. Press Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Backspace; the template repopulates it
  2. 2. Check for an extended tag

    1. Open the supertag config
    2. Look directly above the template for an 'extends' indication
    3. Edit or delete the field in the parent tag
  3. 3. Move fields to the first level

    1. Outdent any fields nested under other nodes in the template
    2. Field searches, table views and title expressions need first-level fields
  4. 4. Re-trigger field initialization

    1. Make the field a direct child of the supertag
    2. For existing nodes, apply any supertag while the field is still a placeholder
