Tana Offline Mode Not Working

Workaround available Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Offline mode only exists in Tana Outliner Desktop 1.0.50 or newer and must be turned on with 'Work offline'. Shared workspaces stay read-only, AI and calendar features stop, and the mobile apps can only capture new notes offline.

Most likely fix: Update and enable offline mode.

Symptoms

Notes won't open without internet, the 'Work offline' option is missing, shared workspaces can't be edited, or the phone app shows nothing offline.

Why it happens

  • Desktop app older than 1.0.50
  • Using the web version, which has no offline mode
  • Trying to edit a shared workspace offline
  • Mobile apps can't read existing notes offline yet

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update and enable offline mode

    1. Update Tana Outliner Desktop to 1.0.50 or newer
    2. Reload the app while online
    3. Choose 'Work offline' from the user menu or the command line
  2. 2. Enter offline mode before you lose the connection

    1. Open the desktop app and let it fully sync
    2. Switch to 'Work offline' before a flight or trip
    3. If you reload with no connection, the desktop app can also enter offline mode
  3. 3. Move offline work to a personal workspace

    1. Shared workspaces are read-only offline
    2. Draft in a personal workspace and move nodes later with Cmd/Ctrl+K > 'Move node to'
  4. 4. Use mobile capture for offline notes

    1. In the mobile app open Capture and write, record a voice memo or add a photo
    2. Captures upload the next time you're online; check Manage > Sync history
