Todoist Not Working? Common Errors & Fixes

Todoist usually stops syncing because of a browser extension, VPN/firewall, outdated app, plan limit or a second device signed into a different account. Run a manual sync, read the yellow warning triangle, and don't clear local data until unsynced changes are copied.

Todoist reminders are usually blocked by the device, not the app: battery saving, Focus/Do Not Disturb, Windows Focus Assist, or a closed desktop app or browser tab. Enable notifications at the OS level, exempt Todoist from battery limits, and send a test from Settings > Reminders.

Most 'not syncing' cases are sync rules: only tasks with a date and time sync (unless all-day sync is on), they land in a separate Todoist calendar, and shared-project tasks sync only if assigned to you. If eligible tasks still don't appear, disconnect and reconnect the integration.

A Todoist widget that shows old tasks, stays blank or asks you to log in is usually frozen by battery saving or using outdated links. Exempt Todoist from battery restrictions (Android), keep Background App Refresh on (iOS), open the app to force a sync, or remove and re-add the widget.

Recurring tasks jump to an unexpected date because 'every' follows the original schedule while 'every!' counts from the day you complete it, and overdue tasks always skip to the next future date. Choose the right form or use 'starting' syntax.

The free Beginner plan allows 5 active personal projects. Archive or delete projects to get back under the limit, use sections or labels instead of extra projects, or upgrade to Pro (300 projects).

If typing 'tomorrow 3pm' doesn't set a date, Smart date recognition is probably off, the language isn't supported (Czech and Turkish aren't), or the format isn't parsed. If words like 'monthly' wrongly become dates, click the highlight to keep them as text.

The Windows/macOS app signs you in through a browser tab, so blocked pop-ups, an old app version or bad local data cause loops and blank screens. Update the app, allow pop-ups, try another default browser, use the magic link, or clear app data and reinstall.

Most failed logins come from using a different sign-in method than the one you signed up with (Google vs email/password). Try each option on the login page, check status.todoist.net for an outage, and use Todoist's account recovery if Google login stopped working.

Moving a parent task with many subtasks can trigger a sync error; if you dismiss it, the task and all subtasks can vanish from every device. Todoist documents this as a known limitation: don't dismiss the error, contact support, and move subtasks in smaller groups.

Todoist has no trash bin. On paid plans you can restore active projects from up to 21 daily backups via CSV import; completed tasks and archived projects aren't in backups. Check archived projects and Activity/Reporting first.

Every Todoist plan, including Pro and Business, caps a project at 300 active tasks (sub-tasks and recurring tasks count) and 20 sections, and the limit can't be raised. Complete, delete or split tasks across projects.
