Todoist Tasks Disappeared After Moving Subtasks
Ongoing All Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Moving a parent task with many subtasks can trigger a sync error; if you dismiss it, the task and all subtasks can vanish from every device. Todoist documents this as a known limitation: don't dismiss the error, contact support, and move subtasks in smaller groups.
Most likely fix: Don't dismiss the sync error.
Symptoms
A sync error appears after moving a large task tree to another project or section, and afterwards the parent and its subtasks are gone everywhere.
Why it happens
- Moving a parent task with a very large number of subtasks at once
- Dismissing the resulting sync error
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Don't dismiss the sync error
- Leave the error visible and don't clear local data
- Contact Todoist support immediately so they can investigate and recover the tasks
2. Move subtasks in small groups
- Select a few subtasks at a time and move them
- Move the parent last once it has few children
3. Restore from a backup (paid plans)
- Settings > Backups: download a backup from before the move
- Create a new project, open its ... menu > Import from CSV, and upload the project's CSV
