Todoist Free Plan Project Limit Reached
Ongoing All Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
The free Beginner plan allows 5 active personal projects. Archive or delete projects to get back under the limit, use sections or labels instead of extra projects, or upgrade to Pro (300 projects).
Most likely fix: Archive projects you're not using.
Symptoms
You can't create a new project, see a limit warning, or after downgrading older projects show an exclamation mark and are view-only.
Why it happens
- More than 5 active personal projects on the free plan
- Downgrade from Pro/Business: only the 5 newest projects stay editable
- Archived projects still active rather than archived
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Archive projects you're not using
- Open the project's ... menu
- Choose Archive; archived projects don't count toward the limit
2. Use sections and labels instead of projects
- Group related lists as sections inside one project (up to 20 sections)
- Use labels to cut across projects; filters are limited to 3 on free
3. Fix view-only projects after a downgrade
- View-only projects can still be deleted, archived or moved
- Archive or delete until you have 5 or fewer active projects
- Or restart Pro to unlock them
4. Upgrade if you truly need more
- Pro allows 300 projects for $7/month or $60/year
- Previous Pro credit is applied when you subscribe on the website with a card
