Todoist Recurring Task Wrong Date
Workaround available All Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Recurring tasks jump to an unexpected date because 'every' follows the original schedule while 'every!' counts from the day you complete it, and overdue tasks always skip to the next future date. Choose the right form or use 'starting' syntax.
Most likely fix: Pick 'every' vs 'every!' deliberately.
Symptoms
After completing a recurring task the next date is too soon, too late, or skips occurrences; rescheduling one occurrence shifts the whole series.
Why it happens
- Using 'every' when you wanted 'every!' (or the reverse)
- Completing an overdue task, which jumps to the next future date
- Relative rules (every week, every 12 days) recalculate from a rescheduled date
- Typing a new date in the task name replaced the recurrence
- Completing after midnight with a daily rule
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Pick 'every' vs 'every!' deliberately
- 'every 3 months' keeps fixed dates (Jan 10, Apr 10, Jul 10)
- 'every! 3 months' counts from completion (done Jan 20 -> Apr 20)
- In the scheduler: Repeat > Custom, then choose scheduled date or completed date
2. Use absolute rules when the day matters
- Write 'every Tuesday' or 'every 15th' instead of 'every week'
- Absolute rules snap back to their schedule after a one-off reschedule
3. Reschedule one occurrence safely
- Pick the new date from the scheduler's suggestions instead of typing it in the task name
- Typing a date in the name removes the recurrence
4. Set start and end dates explicitly
- Use 'every 14 days 7am starting 1 Nov' (put the start date last)
- Use 'until' or 'for 3 weeks' to end a series
5. Handle late-night completions
- Use 'every 24 hours starting 6am' if you often finish after midnight
