Bitwarden Autofill Not Working

Workaround available Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Brave (Windows, macOS, Linux) Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Usually the saved login has no or the wrong website URI, the vault is locked, or the browser's own password manager is getting in the way. Fix the URI, unlock the extension, turn on inline suggestions and use Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+L.

Most likely fix: Add or correct the website URI.

Symptoms

No Bitwarden icon or suggestions in login fields, the extension shows the item but nothing fills, only the username fills, or the keyboard shortcut does nothing.

Why it happens

  • Login item has no website URI or a URI that doesn't match the page
  • Browser extension is locked
  • Inline autofill menu is turned off
  • Browser's built-in password manager competes for the fields
  • Multi-step, iframe or non-standard login forms
  • HTTP site while the saved URI uses HTTPS

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Add or correct the website URI

    1. Open the login item in Bitwarden and click Edit
    2. Under Website (URI), add the address of the actual sign-in page
    3. Leave match detection at Base domain unless the site needs a different rule
    4. Save and reload the page
  2. 2. Turn on inline autofill suggestions

    1. Open the extension and go to Settings > Autofill
    2. Check 'Show autofill suggestions on form fields'
    3. Reload the login page and click into the username field
  3. 3. Use the keyboard shortcut

    1. Unlock the extension
    2. Click into the first login field
    3. Press Ctrl+Shift+L (Cmd+Shift+L on Mac); press again to cycle through multiple matches
  4. 4. Make Bitwarden your default password manager

    1. In the extension go to Settings > Autofill and enable 'Make Bitwarden your default password manager'
    2. In Chrome/Edge settings, turn off 'Offer to save passwords' and built-in autofill
  5. 5. Use linked custom fields for stubborn sites

    1. Edit the login and add a custom field of type Linked
    2. Set its name to the site's field name or id and link it to Username or Password
    3. Save and autofill again
