Bitwarden Says Master Password Is Incorrect

Workaround available All platforms Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Most cases are typos, keyboard layout or email mistakes - or another device still using an old key after a password change. Show the password while typing, check the email and server region, and fully log out and back in on stale devices.

Most likely fix: Check what you're typing.

Symptoms

'Invalid master password' when you're sure it's right, 'Cannot decrypt' errors on items, or a repeating 'Update your encryption settings' prompt that rejects your password.

Why it happens

  • Typo, Caps Lock, extra space or different keyboard layout
  • Wrong email address or server region (US vs EU)
  • Master password changed or key rotated on another device
  • Outdated self-hosted server

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Check what you're typing

    1. Click the eye icon to show the password
    2. Check Caps Lock, keyboard language and trailing spaces
    3. Confirm the email address and the selected server region
  2. 2. Log out fully on stale devices

    1. After changing your password or rotating your key, use Log out (not Lock) on every other device
    2. Log back in so the vault and keys download fresh
  3. 3. Reinstall the app for encryption-settings loops

    1. Confirm your vault is accessible in the web vault
    2. Uninstall and reinstall the mobile app, then log in again
  4. 4. Update a self-hosted server

    1. Update the official Bitwarden server or Vaultwarden to the latest release
    2. Log in again
