Bitwarden Not Asking to Save Password

Workaround available Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

The save prompt is controlled per device by the 'Ask to add login' option and is often swallowed by the browser's own password manager. Turn the option on, unlock the vault before logging in, and disable the browser's password saving.

Most likely fix: Enable 'Ask to add login'.

Symptoms

You log in or sign up and no 'Save login' bar appears, or the browser's own save prompt shows instead.

Why it happens

  • 'Ask to add login' disabled on this device
  • Browser's built-in password manager intercepting the save
  • Vault locked when you logged in
  • Site marked as 'Never' or unusual form submission

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Enable 'Ask to add login'

    1. Open the extension > Settings > Notifications
    2. Check 'Ask to add login' and 'Ask to update existing login'
    3. Repeat on every browser and device - the setting is per installation
  2. 2. Disable the browser's password manager

    1. Chrome: Settings > Autofill and passwords > Google Password Manager > Settings, turn off 'Offer to save passwords'
    2. Edge: Settings > Passwords, turn off 'Offer to save passwords'
  3. 3. Unlock before logging in

    1. Unlock the Bitwarden extension at the start of the browser session
    2. Then sign in to the site
  4. 4. Save the login manually

    1. Open the extension and click New > Login
    2. Generate the password there, save it, then use it on the site
