Lightroom Classic Not Working After Update
Ongoing Mac, Windows Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Several 2026 Classic releases shipped regressions (stuck exports in 15.3.1, a data-loss bug that got 15.4 pulled, silent import failures in 15.5). Update to the latest point release first; if the problem remains, back up the catalog and install the previous version from the Creative Cloud app.
Most likely fix: Install the latest point release.
Symptoms
After updating, exports hang, imports fail silently, Develop becomes much slower, Lightroom crashes or takes 20-30 minutes to launch.
Why it happens
- Regression in a new release
- Catalog upgraded by the new version, so older versions can't open it
- Large preview folders being rebuilt after the update
- GPU driver incompatibility with the new version
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Install the latest point release
- Open the Creative Cloud app > Apps > Updates and install any x.x.1 fix (e.g. 15.4.1 fixed the Duplicates data-loss bug)
- Check Adobe's known-issues list for your version
2. Reset preferences
- Back up your catalog
- Hold Shift+Option (Mac) or Shift+Alt (Windows) while launching Lightroom Classic and confirm resetting preferences
3. Fix very slow launches on big catalogs
- Quit Lightroom and move the catalog's Previews.lrdata folder elsewhere
- Relaunch; previews rebuild as needed (one user's 20-30 minute launches went away)
4. Roll back to the previous version
- Back up the catalog and keep the pre-upgrade copy Lightroom creates
- In the Creative Cloud app, click ... next to Lightroom Classic > Other versions and install the previous release
- Open the pre-upgrade catalog copy; a catalog upgraded by 15.4 can't be opened by 15.3
