Lightroom Generative Remove Not Working
Quick answer
Generative Remove runs on Adobe's servers, so it needs an internet connection and uses generative credits. Bad results usually come from a selection that's too tight or that misses shadows and reflections, or from cropping before removing. Select generously, remove before cropping, and check your connection and credits.
Most likely fix: Check connection, sign-in and credits.
Symptoms
Generative Remove is greyed out, nothing happens after Apply, it adds a new object instead of removing one, leaves ghost outlines or visible edges, or is very slow.
Why it happens
- No internet connection (processing happens on Adobe's servers)
- Generative credits used up, which makes it run slower
- Selection too tight, or missing the object's shadow, reflection or detached parts
- Object touching the crop edge, or crop and lens corrections applied first
- Detect Objects over-selecting thin objects like power lines
- Remove repairs need regenerating after Denoise or other pixel changes
- Known 15.4 bug: the Remove visibility (eye) icon is always greyed out in Classic
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Check connection, sign-in and credits
- Make sure you're online and signed in to your Adobe account
- Check your generative credit balance on your Adobe account page (Lightroom desktop: Preferences > Account)
- The Lightroom plan includes 250 credits a month; Photography includes 1,000
2. Select more than the object
- Paint a generous border around the object
- Include its shadow, reflection and any detached parts
- Turn off Detect Objects if it grabs too much (thin lines, wires)
3. Remove before you crop
- Follow Adobe's order: Denoise, then Remove, then crop/lens corrections/transform
- If the object touches the crop edge, reset the crop, remove, then crop again
4. Regenerate after other AI edits
- If you applied Denoise after Remove, use the Update AI prompt to regenerate repairs
- Check the Remove tool's Opacity is at 100
5. Try the variations and clean up edges
- Click through the three variations with the arrows in the Remove panel
- Use Heal or Clone on any leftover edges
6. On mobile, use the full-resolution original
- Allow Lightroom to download the original when using generative tools (App Settings)
- Stay on a stable connection while the repair is generated
