Lightroom Photos Missing (Question Mark or Exclamation Mark)
Workaround available Mac, Windows Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
A question mark on a folder or an exclamation mark on a photo means Lightroom Classic can't find the original file: it was moved, renamed or deleted outside Lightroom, or the drive is disconnected. Reconnect the drive or use Find Missing Folder to relink at the highest folder level.
Most likely fix: Reconnect the drive.
Symptoms
Folders show a question mark, thumbnails show an exclamation mark, Develop says 'Photo is missing' or 'the file could not be found', and you can't edit or export.
Why it happens
- Photos or folders moved, renamed or deleted in Finder/File Explorer instead of in Lightroom
- External drive disconnected or its drive letter changed
- Files deleted outside Lightroom
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Reconnect the drive
- Plug the drive back in; the dimmed volume in the Folders panel becomes active
- On Windows, make sure the drive keeps the same letter
2. Relink a moved folder
- Right-click the folder with the question mark and choose Find Missing Folder
- Navigate to its new location and click Choose
- Start at the highest parent folder so all subfolders reconnect at once
3. Relink a single photo
- Click the exclamation mark on the thumbnail and note the Previous Location
- Click Locate, find the file and click Select
- Tick 'Find nearby missing photos' to fix others in the same folder with unchanged names
4. Remove photos that are really gone
- Use Library > Find All Missing Photos to collect them
- Select them, press Delete and choose Remove (this only cleans the catalog)
5. Prevent it
- Move and rename photos inside Lightroom's Folders panel, not in the file browser
