Lightroom Catalog Size Huge After Denoise (lrcat-data)
Ongoing Mac, Windows Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Since Denoise, Raw Details and Super Resolution moved into the Detail panel, their data is stored in the .lrcat-data file next to the catalog. Bulk Denoise can grow it by gigabytes, and the data can't be pruned later, so apply AI enhancements only to keepers.
Most likely fix: Apply Denoise only to final picks.
Symptoms
The .lrcat-data file or catalog folder grows by many gigabytes, backups take much longer, or XMP sidecars grow to around 10 MB each.
Why it happens
- Denoise, Raw Details and Super Resolution data stored per photo in .lrcat-data (Classic)
- Applying or syncing presets that include Denoise to many photos
- Denoise data can't be deleted from .lrcat-data afterwards
- With XMP writing on, sidecars also grow
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Apply Denoise only to final picks
- Cull first, then Denoise the photos you'll actually deliver
- Avoid presets or Sync Settings that include Denoise/Super Resolution for whole shoots
2. Keep the catalog folder on a large, fast drive
- Make sure the drive holding the catalog has space for the .lrcat-data growth
- Keep catalog backups on a separate drive and delete old backups regularly
3. Check catalog health after updates
- In Classic 15.5+, accept the startup prompt if Lightroom offers to repair .lrcat-data
- Delete the recovery backup only after confirming edits are intact
