Deleting Files in OneDrive Deletes Them From My PC

Workaround available Windows, Mac, Web Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

OneDrive syncs deletions both ways: removing files from the OneDrive website or folder to free cloud space also deletes them from every synced PC, including a backed-up Desktop. Restore them from the OneDrive recycle bin, and stop backup or move files out before cleaning up cloud storage.

Most likely fix: Restore from the OneDrive recycle bin.

Symptoms

After deleting files in OneDrive to free space, the same files vanish from the PC's Desktop, Documents or OneDrive folder.

Why it happens

  • Sync mirrors deletions to all linked devices
  • PC folder backup makes Desktop/Documents part of OneDrive
  • Users assume OneDrive is a separate backup copy rather than a synced copy

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Restore from the OneDrive recycle bin

    1. Sign in at onedrive.com
    2. Open Recycle bin in the left menu
    3. Select the files and click Restore; they sync back to the PC
  2. 2. Free cloud space without deleting local copies

    1. Turn off PC folder backup (Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup) or unlink the PC first
    2. Move the files out of the OneDrive folder to a normal local folder
    3. Only then delete them from OneDrive online
