How to Stop OneDrive From Backing Up Your Desktop
Workaround available Windows 10, Windows 11 Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
OneDrive PC folder backup moves Desktop, Documents and Pictures into OneDrive. Turn the Desktop toggle off in Manage backup — but the files stay in OneDrive, so you must move them back to the local Desktop yourself.
Most likely fix: Turn off Desktop backup.
Symptoms
Desktop files show cloud/sync icons, the Desktop path is C:\Users\<you>\OneDrive\Desktop, the 5GB free storage fills up, or files disappear from the PC when deleted on another device.
Why it happens
- PC folder backup was enabled during Windows setup or by a OneDrive prompt
- Backup syncs both ways, so the Desktop is really a OneDrive folder
- Free 5GB storage is too small for a full Desktop and Documents backup
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Turn off Desktop backup
- Click the OneDrive taskbar icon > Help & Settings > Settings
- Open Sync and backup > Manage backup
- Switch off Desktop (and Documents/Pictures if you want) and confirm Stop backup
2. Move your files back to the local Desktop
- After stopping backup, your Desktop is empty except a 'Where are my files' shortcut
- Open the shortcut (it opens OneDrive\Desktop)
- Select everything and move it to C:\Users\<you>\Desktop
- Make sure files are fully downloaded (not cloud-only) before moving
3. Check the recycle bin if files are missing
- Look in the local OneDrive folder first
- Then sign in at onedrive.com and open the Recycle bin to restore anything deleted
4. Unlink the PC if you don't want OneDrive at all
- Open OneDrive Settings > Account
- Click Unlink this PC and confirm
- Files already downloaded stay in the local OneDrive folder; online-only files remain in the cloud
