OneDrive Not Syncing

Workaround available Windows 10, Windows 11 Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Usually the OneDrive client is stuck, the account is out of storage, or a file breaks OneDrive's name/path limits. Restart OneDrive, check storage, rename long paths, and reset the client if it is still stuck.

Most likely fix: Restart OneDrive.

Symptoms

The taskbar cloud icon shows 'Processing changes' or 'Sync pending' forever, red X or 'sync paused' icons on files, or files changed on one device never appear on another.

Why it happens

  • OneDrive client process hung or not running
  • OneDrive storage is full (free accounts only get 5GB)
  • File name over 255 characters or full path over 400 characters
  • Outdated OneDrive client or Windows
  • Antivirus real-time scanning blocking or slowing the sync folder

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Restart OneDrive

    1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area
    2. Open Help & Settings (gear icon) > Quit OneDrive
    3. Start OneDrive again from the Start menu and wait for it to re-scan
  2. 2. Check that you have free storage

    1. Open Help & Settings > Settings > Account (or sign in at onedrive.com)
    2. Look at the storage bar; if it is full, delete large files, empty the OneDrive recycle bin or buy more storage
  3. 3. Shorten long file names and folder paths

    1. Look for files with a red X in File Explorer
    2. Rename files so names stay under 255 characters
    3. Move deeply nested folders higher up so the full path stays under 400 characters
  4. 4. Update OneDrive and Windows

    1. Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates
    2. Install the latest OneDrive client from Microsoft's OneDrive download page if your version is old
  5. 5. Exclude the OneDrive folder from antivirus scanning

    1. Open your antivirus settings
    2. Add your OneDrive folder (usually C:\Users\<you>\OneDrive) to the exclusions list
    3. Restart OneDrive
  6. 6. Reset OneDrive

    1. Press Win+R
    2. Run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
    3. If OneDrive does not restart after a few minutes, start it manually from the Start menu
    4. Reset re-syncs everything, so expect a long first sync on large libraries
