OneDrive Error 0x8007016A: The Cloud File Provider Is Not Running
Workaround available Windows 10, Windows 11 Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
This error appears when you open or move an online-only (Files On-Demand) file while the OneDrive client is paused, stopped or broken. Resume or restart OneDrive first; if it persists, reset OneDrive or turn off Files On-Demand.
Most likely fix: Resume sync and restart OneDrive.
Symptoms
Opening, copying or deleting a file in the OneDrive folder fails with 'Error 0x8007016A: The cloud file provider is not running', usually on files with a cloud (online-only) icon.

How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Resume sync and restart OneDrive
- Click the OneDrive taskbar icon
- If sync is paused, choose Resume syncing
- Otherwise quit OneDrive from Help & Settings and start it again
2. Stop battery saver from pausing OneDrive
- Turn off battery saver (Settings > System > Power & battery)
- In OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup > Advanced settings, turn off the option to pause syncing when the device is in battery saver mode
3. Reset OneDrive
- Press Win+R
- Run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
- Start OneDrive again if it doesn't reopen on its own
4. Turn off Files On-Demand as a last resort
- Open OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup > Advanced settings
- Under Files On-Demand, choose Download all files
- Make sure you have enough local disk space before doing this
