OneDrive Storage Full (Error 0x8004def7)

Workaround available Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Web Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Microsoft lists 0x8004def7 as storage full or account suspended. Free space or upgrade storage and OneDrive resumes syncing.

Most likely fix: See what is using your storage.

Symptoms

OneDrive stops syncing with a 'Your OneDrive is full' warning or error 0x8004def7; new files are not uploaded.

Why it happens

  • Free plan's 5GB is used up (often by PC folder backup or photo camera upload)
  • Large files or old versions filling a paid plan
  • Account suspended after being over quota

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. See what is using your storage

    1. Sign in at onedrive.com
    2. Open Settings (gear) > Options > Manage storage / storage breakdown
    3. Sort by size to find the largest files
  2. 2. Delete large files and empty the recycle bin

    1. Delete files you don't need online
    2. Open Recycle bin and empty it — deleted files still count toward storage until removed there
  3. 3. Stop automatic backups from filling it

    1. Turn off PC folder backup (Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup)
    2. Turn off Camera upload in the OneDrive mobile app if photos fill your storage
  4. 4. Add storage

    1. Upgrade to a Microsoft 365 plan (1TB per user) or a standalone OneDrive storage plan
    2. Sync resumes automatically once you are under quota
