OneDrive Error Code 0x8004de40
Workaround available Windows 10, Windows 11 Updated October 21, 2026
Quick answer
Microsoft says 0x8004de40 means OneDrive is having trouble connecting to the cloud. It is almost always a network, proxy/VPN or TLS setting problem on the PC, not your account.
Most likely fix: Check the connection and restart the router.
Symptoms
Sign-in to the OneDrive desktop app fails with 'There was a problem connecting to OneDrive' and error code 0x8004de40 (sometimes 0x8004de88), while the internet otherwise works.
Why it happens
- Unstable or blocked internet connection
- Proxy server or VPN interfering (authenticated proxies are not supported)
- TLS 1.2 disabled in Windows Internet Options
- Third-party antivirus or firewall blocking OneDrive
- Corrupted Winsock network catalog
How to fix it
Try these in order — the most common fix is first.
1. Check the connection and restart the router
- Open onedrive.com in a browser to confirm the service is reachable
- Restart your router and PC
- Run Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Network adapter
2. Turn on TLS 1.2 in Internet Options
- Press Win+R, type inetcpl.cpl and press Enter
- Open the Advanced tab and scroll to the Security section
- Tick Use TLS 1.2 (and TLS 1.3 if listed), click Apply, then restart OneDrive
3. Disable proxy and VPN
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Proxy and turn off any manual proxy
- Disconnect your VPN
- Try signing in to OneDrive again
4. Temporarily disable third-party antivirus/firewall
- Pause real-time protection in your antivirus
- Try signing in; if it works, add OneDrive to the antivirus allow list and turn protection back on
5. Reset Winsock
- Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Run: netsh winsock reset catalog
- Restart the PC and open OneDrive
