Craft Markdown Export Missing Images

Workaround available macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Windows, Web Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Plain Markdown export from Craft keeps only text and basic formatting; images are saved in a separate .assets folder. Export as TextBundle to keep images embedded, and keep the .assets folder next to the .md file.

Most likely fix: Export as TextBundle.

Symptoms

After exporting Craft documents to Markdown, images show as broken links or are missing when opened in Obsidian, Notion or another app.

Why it happens

  • Plain Markdown (.md) does not embed images
  • The .assets folder was separated from the .md file
  • Target app (e.g. Notion) doesn't upload images from Markdown imports

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Export as TextBundle

    1. Open the document
    2. Click Share > Export As
    3. Choose TextBundle (.textbundle) to include images and attachments
  2. 2. Keep the assets folder

    1. After a Markdown export, keep the .assets folder in the same directory as the .md file
  3. 3. Bulk export on Mac or iPad

    1. Select documents in a folder (Shift+Click on Mac, tap and hold on iPad)
    2. Click ⋯ > Export As > Markdown, TextBundle or PDF
  4. 4. Moving to Notion

    1. Export as Word (.docx) on Mac, iOS or Web — Notion uploads images from .docx imports
