ExpressVPN Connected But No Internet

Workaround available Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

The tunnel is up but traffic isn't flowing, usually because of a bad server, a blocked protocol, antivirus filtering or proxy settings. Switch to Smart/Fastest Location, change protocol, whitelist ExpressVPN and turn off any system or browser proxy.

Most likely fix: Update the app.

Symptoms

ExpressVPN shows Connected, but websites don't load, either immediately or after a few minutes.

Why it happens

  • Outdated ExpressVPN app
  • Poor connectivity at the chosen server location
  • Network filtering affecting certain protocols
  • Antivirus or security software interference
  • Proxy settings interfering with the VPN

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Update the app

    1. Download and install the latest ExpressVPN version for your device
    2. Restart the app and reconnect
  2. 2. Use Smart Location or Fastest Location

    1. Desktop: connect to Smart Location
    2. iOS/Android: connect to Fastest Location
    3. If browsing returns, the previous server had a temporary issue
  3. 3. Change protocol

    1. Open the protocol setting
    2. Work through Lightway – UDP, Lightway – TCP, WireGuard, OpenVPN – TCP, OpenVPN – UDP
  4. 4. Whitelist ExpressVPN in your antivirus

    1. Disable the antivirus briefly to test
    2. If browsing works, add ExpressVPN as an exception
  5. 5. Disable proxy settings

    1. Turn off any manual proxy in your OS network settings
    2. In Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Opera, set the browser to use no proxy
    3. Reconnect ExpressVPN
