ExpressVPN Unable to Connect / Stuck on Connecting

Workaround available Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, routers Updated October 21, 2026

Quick answer

Usually a server under maintenance, security software blocking the tunnel, an outdated app or a network blocking the protocol. Update the app, switch to another recommended location, change protocol and whitelist ExpressVPN in your antivirus.

Most likely fix: Check your internet without the VPN.

Symptoms

An 'Unable to Connect' message, the app spinning on 'Connecting' for a long time, or repeated failed attempts while the internet works fine with the VPN off.

Why it happens

  • The selected server location is under maintenance or overloaded
  • Antivirus, firewall or online security app blocks the VPN connection
  • Outdated ExpressVPN app version
  • Network or ISP blocks the current protocol
  • Dedicated IP used without the Lightway protocol

How to fix it

Try these in order — the most common fix is first.

  1. 1. Check your internet without the VPN

    1. Disconnect ExpressVPN
    2. Open any website in your browser
    3. If nothing loads, fix your internet connection first; if it loads, continue below
  2. 2. Update the ExpressVPN app

    1. On desktop, install the update when the in-app banner appears or download the latest version from expressvpn.com
    2. On mobile, update from the App Store or Google Play
    3. On smart TVs, check the TV's app store for an Update button
  3. 3. Connect to a different server location

    1. On desktop, click > next to Selected Location
    2. Pick another location from the Recommended list
    3. On iOS/Android, tap Change under the power button and choose another location
  4. 4. Change the VPN protocol

    1. On desktop, click the VPN Protocol widget on the VPN tab; on mobile tap Protocol
    2. Try in order: Lightway – UDP, Lightway – TCP, WireGuard, OpenVPN – TCP, OpenVPN – UDP (IKEv2 on iOS)
    3. Confirm with Change Anyway if prompted
    4. If you use a dedicated IP, stay on a Lightway protocol
  5. 5. Whitelist ExpressVPN in your antivirus

    1. Temporarily disable the antivirus/security app and try connecting
    2. If it connects, add ExpressVPN as an exception or trusted app
    3. If needed, lower the security level from High to Medium or allow UDP ports 1194-1204
    4. Restart ExpressVPN and connect again
  6. 6. Send diagnostics to support

    1. Open Help > Contact Us in the app
    2. Choose Issues with the VPN service and describe the problem
    3. Submit with diagnostic information included; support replies by email
